SABS

What is SABS certification in South Africa?

SABS (South African Bureau of standards) is the abbreviation of South African Bureau of standards. It is a compulsory certification in South Africa. SABS certificate must be presented whenever the regulated products are exported to South Africa. SABS is a neutral third-party certification body in charge of system certification and product certification in South Africa. In addition to the responsibility of formulating standards, SABS also manages the mandatory standards on behalf of the state, grants the right to use the marks for the products conforming to the specifications, issues certificates to the enterprises conforming to ISO09001 and ISO9002, and is responsible for the inspection and testing before shipment and issues certificates of conformity on behalf of the state and some major purchasers. SABS certification is widely used in chemical products, biological products, fiber products and clothing, mechanical products, safety equipment, electrical products, civil and construction and automotive products. In recent years, SABS certification has become an important weight for the South African government to control the import of products.
SABS certified product range

SABS certification is divided into two categories: product certification and system certification, and SABS product certification mainly includes the following eight categories: chemical products, biological products, fiber products and clothing, mechanical products, safety equipment, electrical products, civil and construction and automotive products. Among them, the construction materials and products involved are: stone products, concrete products, roof materials, cement, lime, cement mixture, natural construction stone, safety glass, steel structure, wood and wood products, brick, tile, paint, paint, sealant, etc.

SABS certification process

1. The manufacturer shall complete the application form;
2. If the factory has more than one factory, the application form shall be filled in separately. Each product within the scope of certification is required to be reflected in the application form. In addition, the factory also needs to fill in the credit application form of the person in charge, who shall guarantee the first review fee and other certification fees;
3. After receiving the application form, SABS will issue an approved quotation;
4. On the premise that the quotation is accepted, the South African Bureau of standards will review the factory;
5. If all the above reviews are passed, SABS will prepare an annual supervision contract;
6. There will be two auditors for random review every year, and the cost of supervision, review and test every year will be stated in the contract;
7. The two auditors will take the spot check samples back to the laboratory;
8. For the samples to be tested later, SABS will take samples from the buyer's goods in South Africa. If the batch of goods is less than 4 times a year, the insufficient samples will be sent out from the factory at the factory's expense;
9. If the test result is unqualified, the cost of sample and retest will be borne by the factory;
10. The validity period of the certificate will be three years, unless it is cancelled for other reasons.

SABS certification considerations

1. First, the enterprise must appoint an agent, and the agent will declare that it is responsible for all data information, after-sales and other matters. The South African road traffic Act (act93:1996) requires importers to register with the local Ministry of transport;
2. South Africa is a British country and a right-hand member country. At the same time, it can only continue testing and submit documents to SABS after successful registration;
3. All test items shall be completed in strict accordance with relevant South African standards and technical documents such as reports meeting NRCS shall be submitted;
4. The whole certification process includes two parts: test report review and sample vehicle consistency inspection; (Note: the sample vehicle inspection can be arranged in China or South Africa according to the needs of the enterprise)
5. Once all the data and sample vehicles have passed the review and evaluation of NRCS, NRCS will issue a certificate. Generally, the whole audit process shall not exceed 15 working days.
6. Valid date of certificate: as long as the applicable standards and regulations are not changed and the vehicle is not modified, the certificate will remain valid;
7. NRCS will be responsible for conformity control of production, and it has the right to withdraw the certificate in case of any discrepancy.
8. In order to ensure the conformity of production, NRCS may carry out factory review after a period of time after the certificate application.
SABS certification period: 3-5 weeks
